Time at the beach is part of everyday life in Hawaii — even during workdays, beaches will fill during lunch hours and at sunrise and sunset as locals munch on plate lunches or jump into the water for a quick surf session.Of course, it's not just locals at the beach, but also visitors from around the world soaking in our balmy weather. And at the beginning of the year you can see a certain uniformity among them, escaping the cold snaps that descend in earnest around January. Time. To. Get. Warm.I joined friends who were escaping winter for a week on Oahu with their two boys, almost 2 and 3, on one of their many trips to the beach. (No joke, they went to the beach every day they were here.) We went to Puaena Point which, if you haven't been, is ideal for families with young children because the cove is protected by reef. You can watch big surf on the outer reef while enjoying relatively calm water at shore, and the inside break produces enjoyable beginner-size waves for those who want to learn to surf. Explore the break in 3D here > Between running around after those wildly mobile toddlers, I shot some video of the spectacular weather we were enjoying — low 80s, breezy and sunny. There was a large swell hitting the outside reef and we could see surfers getting towed-in to the double-overhead sets, about a mile out. If you're shivering through some wintry weather right now, I hope the sound of the shore and brilliant sun warm your thoughts, and provide some distraction until you can get here in person. You can always explore Hawaii in 3D until then, and plan your perfect vacation to the Islands. |
