Year of the Rabbit block party draws thousands to Chinatown

Happy Year of the Rabbit! Chinese astrology runs on a 12-year cycle, so if you were born this year, 12 years ago, 24 years ago and so on, the Rabbit is your sign. A few characteristics associated with Rabbits (excerpted from Honolulu's Chinatown site):

Thousands came out yesterday to ring in the Chinese New Year with food, music, martial arts demonstrations, a parade and lion dances. Kung Hee Fat Choy!

  • Everyone has their favorite part about Chinese New Year celebrations. Mine? The food.
  • Especially the fried gin dui. You can get it with savory or sweet centers.
  • I'm a fan of the sweet black bean and coconut gin dui. Greasy goodness.
  • A popular photo op: Lion heads on break.
  • Happy Year of the Rabbit!
  • Tens of thousands venture through Chinatown during the new year block party.
  • Plenty of bunnies on hand for Year of the Rabbit.
  • Bouncy houses kept the kids engaged and gave mommies and daddies a chance to rest.
  • More kiddie distractions.
  • A mobile miniature golf course let the kids test their putting skills.
  • Scenes from the parade: One of a handful of trolleys that rolled through.
  • The Narcissus Queen and Princesses each had Corvette coaches.
  • As did Miss Hawaii USA.
  • Wonderful colors in the parade.
  • And, of course, lions. They were well fed with money for good luck.
  • Later that night, the scene at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza.
  • This military band was one of several live musical acts out on the street.
  • The crowd at night: Much the same as daytime — packed!
