Waikiki celebrates Year of the Rabbit on Feb. 3

Wednesday, February 02, 2011

Last weekend was the blowout, but the actual holiday falls tomorrow. You can, of course, wander into Chinatown to enjoy fresh dim sum and I'm sure a few lions will be creeping about, but Waikiki plans to celebrate as well. Be sure to feed lisee (red envelopes with money) to the lions for health and prosperity in the new year — but they'll take dollar bills directly, too. Here's where:

The Royal Hawaiian Center will celebrate from 5-8:30 p.m. with a lion dance performance and a blast of firecrackers in the Royal Grove. The traditional lion dance will continue throughout the center visiting merchants who hang a lisee envelope above their doorway. All money collected will benefit the Lung Kong Organization.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village will host the 2011 Narcissus Queen and her court to help usher in the Year of the Rabbit at 6 p.m., followed by a lion dance through the resort.

The Hyatt Regency Waikiki will celebrate with a special menu at Ciao Mein on Thursday night, including pot roast pork, snapper, green tea panna cotta and more — and a Chinese lion dance at 8 p.m.
