Top of the morning after St. Patrick's Day to ya!

Best thing about St. Patrick's Day aren't the costumes, the general merriment or even the beer — although that last is a close second. It's the music. I texted a friend who wasn't able to stay that we were going to dance like we had no rhythm. That's the essence of Irish music: you're impelled to move, if only to jump up and down in place — which, when it's this crowded, is about all you have room for. And no one could possibly care if you don't have moves. We're only hoping you stay upright.

This year, I followed the Doolin' Rakes around from the block party stage outside on Nuuanu Avenue to O'Toole's Irish Pub's tiny stage, on which the band doesn't even fit — guitarist Jamie Winpenny took up residence next to the subwoofers.

Fantastic time with thousands of my fellow part-Irish-somewhere-down-the-line revelers. Until next year!

The block party at the corner of Nuuanu and Merchant, where Murphy's Bar & Grill is located. Murphy's sponsors the event. This is early on — there would be so many people by evening you couldn't navigate the street. Almost.

A festive pooch.

Some took aim at Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's proposed alcohol tax to help balance the state budget. This was definitely their crowd.

The scene later that night. Today, we clean up.
